Rekawka is a folk picnic-taking place on Tuesday after Easter on Krzemionki in Podgórze. Even as late as in 19th century gathered here the citizens of Cracow and from the hill they trew down the rests of the blessed food to the poor waiting at the feet of the hill. That practice has its roots in pre-Christian epoch and it's connected with the tomb of Krak, legendary grounder of Cracow. The tradition says that the people loved their ruler so much, that after his death they heaped up a huge mound for him, carrying the earth in sleeves (Polish - rękawy). And it is said that from that event comes the unusual name - Rekawka. We can't say anything about legendary Krak; archaeological research confirmed only that the mound was the place of cult, connected with a spring ceremony of Dziady. That pagan feast of ancestors' souls consisted in doing the dead some services. The shrubs were planted as places of shelter for souls imagined in form of birds. The fencing fights were carried out to honour their memory and with weapon frighten away some bad spirits that could threaten the good souls. The fires were burnt on the graves of the dead and they were presented with food. Maybe an interesting custom of throwing the eggs, nuts and apples down the hill has something to do with offerings put down on the graves of the ancestors.

Traveller, do you not know how a poet can live beyond the grave?
You stand and read this verse: it is I, then, who am speaking.
Reading this work aloud, your living voice is mine.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
